Guide to Oily Skin
Tired of having to deal with the oil? We’ve curated the perfect list of tips, tricks, and tried-and-true products just for you. With some helpful techniques, skincare, and makeup, we can combat those oils together and seize the day. Sit back, relax, and let's get to business (don’t worry, only the fun kind).
Oily Skin DO’s:
For all you oily skin beauties, please for the love of the skincare gods, MOISTURIZE. There is a misconception that moisturizer will only cause your skin to produce more oils, making your face too shiny. However, this is actually FALSE. In fact, the opposite happens. Without applying moisturizer to your face, your skin will start to have a brain of its own, producing more and more oils to compensate for the lack of hydration it is receiving. In turn, our biggest enemy (AKA acne) will creep its way into our lives.
Skincare ingredients such as glycolic acid, retinols, salicylic acid, and hyaluronic acid are great not only to combat the oils but also acne. The Natura Bissé Diamond Glyco Extreme Peel is a multi-acid miracle worker and one of our absolute favorites. Finding products that contain these key ingredients will change your life.
Blot, blot, blot those oils away! I think we can all relate to having those long days and looking in the mirror around 3 pm to find an oil factory placed on our face. You don’t want that, we don’t want that, no one wants that. Using blotting sheets can help to remove some of those access oils that may cause backed-up pores or acne. They are compact and can fit right into your purse or pocket.
Oily Skin DON’Ts:
Do you ever feel the need to touch your face throughout the day to check for access oil? STOP THAT (said with love). Doing this will only cause the spread of bacteria and more oil (no need for ANY more of that).
We know cleansing your skin throughout the day can be tempting because the grease can make you feel a little dirty, but again, please, no. This will only dry out your skin even more and can actually cause more breakouts as your skin will dry out. Stick to cleansing only in the morning and night. We know it may be hard, but trust us.
Skincare:
Cleansing your skin each morning and night with a gentle yet effective cleanser is very important. The Dr. Barbara Sturm Cleanser is the perfect fix. It is a gentle formula yet deeply cleanses to get rid of all the build-up from throughout the day (or night) without stripping your skin of its natural oils and making it too dry.
When oils are constantly bombarding your face, there is truly no better feeling than clarified and clean feeling skin. The Tata Harper Clarifying Mask is the perfect mask for this magical feeling. Imperfections and redness will be reduced with this amazing product, without drying out or irritating that beautiful face of yours.
For you oily skin queens, the struggle is real when it comes to SPF. No fear, Supergoop Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40 is here! Your skin will be left mattified, poorless, and protected from the sun. What more could you want?
As stated previously (we hope you didn’t forget) moisturization is key. The Augustinus Bader The Light Cream is the perfect hydrating moisturizer that renews and balances your skin’s complexion, while also leaving no shiny residue. It’s perfect for the unwanted dew (notice how we didn’t say “beautiful glow” you oily skin people get it).
Makeup:
Imagine putting on a full face of makeup only to have it ruined because your face decides to produce buckets of oils each day. If you struggle with oily skin, you know this is a real thing. If you don’t want this to happen anymore, the Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier will become your new best friend. Not only does this primer blur your pores, but it really does keep your skin matte so that your foundation, or concealer, or whatever you use stays on exponentially longer. You’re welcome in advance.
Another makeup item we love is the Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation, whichis not only oil-free, but has a matte finish without making your skin look like cakey. It is extremely long-wearing with no room for slip and slides (oils, duh). If you want that glow from within look, while still needing the mattifying effects, the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Setting Powder is beautiful. While blurring the skin and reducing the appearance of shine, this powder also offers a very natural looking finish. We highly recommend!
To add a pop of color to your cheeks, the Laura Mercier Blush Color Infusion is a must-have. The matte shades give your face a smooth and beautiful flush. Additionally, if you want that bronzed goddess look, the Westman Atelier Beauty Butter Powder Bronzer gives a healthy-looking bronze with a matte finish.
We know it can be a love-hate relationship with oily skin, but these products can hopefully make the love a little (or a lot) bigger than the hate. We sincerely hope these products help you and your oily skin journey. Remember that everyone’s skin type is different and no matter the oiliness (or dryness), you are beautiful!
